BANGALORE: The Kims Tennis Academy will conduct the AITA National Series championship for under-14 and under-16 boys and girls at the academy courts here from January 29 to February 3. The event carries the highest number of points (75) in the AITA Series. Leading junior players in the country have confirmed their participation in the championship including Mohit Mayur, Rohit Bisht, Sai Karthik and Tushal Thawani (under-14 boys), K. Vinayak Sharma, Lakshit Sood and Shantanu Rajput (under-16 boys), Nova Patel, M. Divija and Rishika Sunkara (under-14 girls), Prachi Nadkarni and Gopika Kapoor (under-16 girls). The main draw for boys will consist of 64 players with 52 direct entries, eight qualifiers and four wild cards and that of girls will be 48 players, with 36 direct entries, eight qualifiers and four wild cards. The qualifying sign-in for boys will be on January 26 and for girls on January 27. The main draw sign-in for boys, is on January 28 and for girls, it is on January 29. The main draw for boys begins on January 29 and for girls on January 30. The championship is being sponsored by Polyflx and Shashikanth Kanbargimath will be the director of the tournament. Eastern triumphs
The Eastern Region emerged champion for the fourth consecutive year in the All India Geological Survey of India athletic meet that concluded here on Thursday. Special awards: Best male athlete: Dibyendu Saha (Central Headquarters, Kolkata); Best female athletes: Minoti Dutta and Sangeeta Awari (Central Headquarters, Kolkata).
Vijaya College advances
Host Govindadasa College (Suratkal), Vijaya College (Mulki) and Alva's College of Physical Education (Moodbidri) entered the semifinals of the Mangalore University inter-collegiate softball tournament in Mangalore on Friday. While Vijaya got the better of St. Aloysius College (Mangalore) 14-9, Alvas College defeated Milagres College (Kallianpur) by 17-12. The host qualified as both its pre-quarterfinal opponents failed to turn up.
