Holland assured of final berth

Buenos Aires: Eva de Goede scored from the run of play in the 17th minute as the Netherlands defeated Australia 1-0 in women's Champions Trophy hockey tournament, assuring the Dutch of a berth in the final.

The victory was the Netherlands' fourth in as many matches and left it as the only unbeaten team and atop the six-team table with 12 points.

Meanwhile, Argentina beat Japan 3-1, leaving it in the second place with nine points, two ahead of Australia. Germany, which beat Spain 2-1, is next with six, while Spain has one and Japan zero.

The reigning World Cup champions The Netherlands dominated throughout, creating five penalty corners and holding the Australians without any.

Continuous attack

Against Japan, the Argentines attacked almost continuously for the first 20 minutes, but generated only a handful of chances by Carla Rebecci.

Noel Barrionuevo converted Argentina's only penalty corner of the first half in the 31st minute for her third goal of the tournament. Marine Russo doubled Argentina's lead in the 41st minute, converting a rebound from Agustina Garcia's centre. Rebecci scored three minutes later to give Argentina a 3-0 lead.

The results: Germany 2 (Nadine Ernsting-Krienke 35, Julia Mueller 50) bt Spain 1 (Barbara Malda 68).

The Netherlands 1 (Eva de Goede 17) bt Australia 0.
