TERROR MEN: Two suspected members of the Hizbul Mujahideen, Luptur Rehman from Bangladesh (left) and Mohammad Amin Wani from J & K, being produced by the police in New Delhi.
NEW DELHI: The two alleged Harkat-ul-Jehad-e-Islami (HuJI) militants, including a Bangladeshi national, arrested here by the Special Cell of the Delhi police on January 4 planned to carry out a blast in the Capital in the run-up to the Republic Day celebrations. Deputy Commissioner of Police Alok Kumar on Thursday said Mohammad Ameen Wani was arrested at Adarsh Nagar in North-West Delhi, while the Bangladeshi national, Lutufur Rehman, was arrested at Nizamuddin in South Delhi. Mr. Kumar said the two admitted that they had been directed to carry out a terrorist strike in the Capital before January 26. During interrogation, Wani allegedly disclosed that initially he was sent for training to a camp in Muzaffarabad in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir and then he was trained in the handling of sophisticated weapons and configuring improvised explosive devices in a HuJI camp at Reeshkhore in Afghanistan. Wani was then launched in the Kashmir Valley. In December 2002, he was deputed as the HuJI chief of Anantnag sector. During this period, he visited the Capital and Ajmer several times to expand the network of the outfit. He was arrested in June 2003. After being released in June 2006, he started operating under the HuJI commanders Sher Khan and Danish. In December 2006, Wani allegedly collected Rs. 5 lakhs of hawala money for terrorist activities in the Valley.
