ERODE: The Forest Department has constructed solar fence, at a cost of Rs. 32 lakh, to prevent wild animals from entering farmers land. The department has the responsibility of saving animals from poachers and farmers and villagers from animals, say officials. Some wild animals are entering farmers lands situated on forest boundaries to consume crops and sometimes they destroy them. To prevent this, some some farmers have erected electric fence around their land, which is illegall. This has led to the death of elephants and other wild animals. Recently, four elephants died of electric shock in Sathyamangalam and Anthiyur forest areas. This has prompted the Forest Department to erect solar fence. Such fences have already been erected at Athani, Kakayanure, Thalakkarai and Kongadai. Unlike electric fences, wild animals will experience a mild shock when they come into contact with solar fences, Forest Department officials said. Immediately the animal will leave the place. Such fences have been erected in Jarathal, Sennampatty, Sidhagoundenur, Sanisandhai, Komalikkadu, Murali, Papathikattupudur and Perumalkoil area. The department officials said that trenches will be dug to keep away animals.
