TIRUCHI : The K.A.P.Viswanatham Government Medical College Hospital here will get a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scan equipment within the next three months.

A new building will come up at the Annal Gandhi Memorial Hospital, attached to the college, to accommodate the equipment and the `bhoomi puja' for the same was performed on Thursday.

The construction work would be completed in the next three months, after which the equipment would be installed, the Dean (in-charge) of the hospital, M.Dhanraju, said. The facility would come as a boon for the poorer sections. While private diagnostic centres charged over Rs.5, 000 for an MRI scan, the Government Hospital would offer the service at half the cost, Dr. Dhanraju said.

The State Government had recently ordered the installation of the MRI scan equipment at various district headquarters hospitals, including the one here. The equipment and accessories would be installed at a total cost of nearly Rs.5 crore, Dr. Dhanraju said.

Meanwhile, the hospital had also sought funds from the Union Government for establishing a radiotherapy unit for treating cancer patients. The proposal envisages setting up a separate ward with about 20 beds.

The hospital has already forwarded comprehensive proposals to the State Government for strengthening its infrastructure at an estimated cost of nearly Rs.60 crore. The proposals were forwarded following the public outcry over the exclusion of the hospital from the list of institutions to be upgraded on par with the All India Institute of Medical Sciences last year.
