CHENNAI: Schools for India held the International Cycle Race on East Coast Road to improve awareness about its scheme to build and run high-quality schools in rural areas on Friday, in association with the Cycling Federation of India.

Around 400 participants took part in the race that had `the highest prize money for a cycling event in the country', according to organisers.

Winners in the men and women categories for professional rally and amateur race won around Rs. 2.25 lakh.

A few participants from France and the United States, besides teams from the southern States, Punjab, Maharashtra and the Railways, were part of the race that started at VGP Golden Beach.

It had different stop points for various sections — for professionals and amateurs at Pondicherry and for students at Muttukadu. A special race for children with Down's Syndrome was also held.

Schools for India's office is at 83, Alwarthirunagar Annexe, Chennai, and can be contacted at 2377 4889.
