Thiruvananthapuram: The next time the stray dogs in your street become a nuisance; you have only to reach for the telephone. The City Corporation's dog catching squad is just a call away. The core team of veterinary volunteers set up by the local body is now equipped with mobile telephones. Mayor C. Jayan Babu on Friday handed over two mobile handsets to the volunteers at a function held at the Corporation office.

Speaking at the function, the Mayor said the service of the team would now be available round- the-clock. Set up under the Suraksha scheme for Integrated Rabies Control and Animal Birth Control launched by the Corporation, the team comprising 17 members is equipped to handle animals brought to the veterinary hospitals as well as to train and look after pet dogs. They have been deployed at the Veterinary Hospital at Pettah.

Though the primary duty of the handlers would be to capture stray dogs for sterilisation and provide para medical assistance to veterinary doctors, their services would also be made available to pet owners.

The Corporation has also finalised plans to construct a dog hostel and an in-patient division at the Pettah Hospital.

Designed by the Habitat Technology Group, the building will have separate wings for healthy dogs and diseased animals undergoing treatment.

The services of the animal handlers will now be available on the numbers: 2164 891, 216 4892 and 216 4893.
