THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The supply of drinking water to many parts of the city that was disrupted on Thursday evening following the detection of a crack in a 1,200 mm concrete pipe at the Kummi-Irumba road was restored on Friday night. There was delay in the restoration of pumping when a minor leak was detected in a welded portion of a newly laid section of mild steel pipe during the `trial flow' of water at 5.30 p.m. on Friday. Water supply from Aruvikkara was immediately cut off and the leak rectified. Full pumping resumed at 7 p.m. and the observatory zone's distribution network stabilised after midnight. The repair work on the line was delayed by many hours when the Kerala Water Authority (KWA) engineers discovered a crack in a section of the pipe adjacent to the one that was being replaced. This meant cutting away another five-metre section of concrete pipe and replacing it with a mild steel pipe. Thus, the restoration of water supply originally scheduled for Friday morning took place only at night. Now that three sections of the concrete pipeline, one last week and two, on Friday, have been replaced with mild steel pipes, the KWA is also preparing to put in place `concrete cradles' beneath the 15-metre stretch of the steel line so that it does not sag.
