NAMAKKAL: To empower women through self-help groups (SHGs) and to ensure child development among the hill tribes and dwellers in Kolli Hills, the Madras Aluminium Company Limited (MALCO) has undertaken an integrated project of improving literacy ratio among the tribal women and to develop individual as well as group entrepreneurs. MALCO's special project, costing Rs. 5 lakh a year, is being implemented in coordination with DTMC, a non-governmental organisation, to train more than 200 women members of 50 SHGs in Kolli Hills under various income generation programmes. The inaugural function of this project was held at the training centre of DTMC at Vasalurpatti in Kolli Hills. Hundred women SHG members participated. Renganathan, Manager, Ms. Krupa, Assistant Manager, Mr. Jijo Mathew, Officer (all from MALCO), Sr. Franscina, Director of DTMC and panchyat presidents from Valavanthinadu, Thinnanurnadu and Selurnadu took part.
Adult education centres
The SHG members will be trained in mashroom cultivation, tailoring, knitting and vermi compost preparation. Besides, MALCO is running free tuition centres and adult education centres to increase the literacy rate. It has also adopted a primary health sub-centre in Kolli Hills. A total of about Rs. 55 lakh has been earmarked by MALCO for various projects in Kolli Hills this fiscal.
