Abramoff case: jail for former Congressman

WASHINGTON: United States former Congressman Bob Ney was sentenced on Friday to 30 months in prison for his role in former lobbyist Jack Abramoff's scandal that rocked Capitol Hill, NBC has reported.

Ney pleaded guilty to accepting bribes from Abramoff.

The former Republican lawmaker from Ohio resigned from Congress last October after pleading guilty to bribery charges in accepting golf trips, campaign donations, meals and trips from Abramoff.

Ney admitted that he accepted gifts and donations in return for political favours.

He will serve his prison sentence in a Federal facility in Morgantown, West Virginia.

U.S. District Judge Ellen Segal Huvelle said when Ney is released from prison he will pay a fine of $6,000 and serve two more years on probation.

Abramoff is already serving a five-year sentence for his role in the lobby scandal and is said to be cooperating with authorities in identifying politicians he bribed. His sentence is for the Sun Cruz gambling casino scandal and he is yet to be sentenced in Ney's bribery case. — Xinhua
