Struggle group submits plea to Patil

Special Correspondent

KARAIKAL: The Karaikal Struggle Group (KSG) on Saturday submitted a memorandum to Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil reiterating its plea and requested Mr. Patil to take steps to constitute a high-level committee for conferring separate Union Territory status for Karaikal region.

S.P. Selvashanmugam, convener of the KSG, said here on Saturday that the KSG had also requested the Home Minister to take steps for establishing the proposed Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Karaikal, which was sanctioned by the Centre to the Union Territory.

He said that Puducherry had already been flooded with more than 15 institutions for higher education including the JIPMER and a Central university. Mr Selvashanmugam appealed to the Home Minister to insist the Puducherry Government to provide all facilities and carry out developmental activities in the region till a decision would be taken by the Centre in this regard.
