Staff Reporter
MADURAI: The Madurai Region Chief Engineer, Public Works Department, R.V.S. Vijayakumar, has clarified that three turns of irrigation is possible using the available Periyar credit water for the standing paddy crop in Madurai and Dindigul districts. In a statement, he said that 2,400 mcft of water was required for three wettings. The quantity of water available as on date was 3,440 mcft and hence "there is no problem in giving water to the farmers of Periyar credit for three wettings in the turn system," he said. He was reacting to a news item published in this column in which the Executive Engineer, Periyar Main Canal Division, Melur, K. Pandikaruppanan, was quoted as saying that "only one more turn of irrigation is possible." The EE was trying to convince the farmers (during the meeting) that "as water regulation started from middle of October, the water requirement for 2nd and 3rd wetting will be for the tail-end farmers only and he never said that only one wetting is possible, " Mr. Vijayakumar said.
Water level
The water level in the Periyar dam on Saturday stood at 117.80 feet (full level 136 feet) with an inflow of 93 cusecs and a discharge of 925 cusecs. The level in the Vaigai dam was 46.46 feet (full level 71 cusecs) with an inflow of 684 cusecs and a discharge of 41 cusecs. The combined Periyar credit stood at 3,440 mcft.
