NEW DELHI: Patients suffering from osteoarthritis and considering knee replacement surgery can now opt for a "less invasive" autologous cartilage transplant. Well-known doctor P. K. Dave led a team of surgeons in conducting the first such successful operation at Rockland Hospital here on Friday.
This surgery uses tissue regeneration using autologous cells. In this procedure, according to Dr. Dave, cells for implantation are derived from in-vitro expansion of autologous chondrocytes isolated from the biopsy of a patient's normal articular cartilage. Biopsy from a lesser-weight bearing area is the source of chondrocytes that are isolated, expanded through cell cultivation processes, and finally implanted into articular cartilage
Dr. Dave, who is Head of the Orthopaedics Department of the hospital.
