Uncertainty over Putin's JNU visit

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Uncertainty prevails over whether Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) here would host Russian President Vladimir Putin during his upcoming visit to India for the Republic Day celebrations.

While JNU Vice-Chancellor B.B. Bhattacharya ruled out Mr. Putin's visit to the campus, the students' union is upbeat and "looking forward" to the high-profile visit. "He is expected to come after the Republic Day celebrations. He will release a book on Indo-Russian relations authored by a faculty member. He is also likely to announce a grant for the Centre for Russian, Central Asian and East European Studies in the School of International Studies," JNU Students' Union president Dhananjay Tripathi told The Hindu .

Prof. Bhattacharya, however, said that though Mr. Putin had expressed a desire to come to JNU, his hectic schedule would not allow him to do so. "I met some of his deputies and they told me that due to time constraints Mr. Putin would not be able to visit JNU," he said.
