Politics is as important for development as economics: J.S. Verma Politics is as important as economics for development, says former Chief Justice

PROUD MOMENT: Gold medallists participate in the procession held as part of the 57th Annual Convocation of Karnatak University in Dharwad on Saturday.

DHARWAD: Former Chief Justice of India J.S. Verma has called upon young people to make the best use of opportunities coming their way owing to the impact of globalisation.

Delivering the convocation address at the 57th Annual Convocation of Karnatak University here on Saturday, the former Chief Justice felt that outsourcing was a corollary of globalisation, which offered new challenges and opportunities to Indian youth and they should utilise it for their development.

According to Report of the International Symposium and Round Table (1990), education needs to be "more caring" in the 21st century, which includes caring for other people, caring for the social, economic and ecological welfare of society and nation and caring for human rights, he said.

Mr. Verma said politics was as important as economics for development. Sustained poverty reduction required equitable growth, that is, empowerment of people through democratic governance at all levels.

Economic growth unless backed by proper policies was ineffective in achieving the goal of development, he said. Majority of people in the country were deprived of essential services. The main reason for this was poor policies and poorer management with inadequate regulation, he said.

Earlier, Governor T.N. Chaturvedi conferred honorary doctorate on veteran theatre artiste Yenagi Balappa and scientist M.R. Srinivasan.

He also gave away graduate and postgraduate degrees, diplomas and certificates to 24,526 students and awarded gold medals to 429 students.

Earlier, S.K. Saidapur, Vice-Chancellor of the University, welcomed the gathering. Higher Education Minister and Pro-Chancellor D.H. Shankaramurthy was present.
