Jayalalithaa flays `pruning' of scheme

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: General secretary of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) Jayalalithaa on Saturday accused the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) Government of scaling down the number of beneficiaries under the farmers' security scheme from 1.99 crore to 66 lakh.

Reacting to the Governor's address, Ms. Jayalalithaa referred to the announcement reintroducing the Tamil Nadu Agricultural Labourers Social Security and Welfare Scheme.

She said the AIADMK regime had introduced the "unique scheme" for the benefit of farmers at every stage of their life. Several States wanted to take the cue from Tamil Nadu in implementing such schemes. However, it had been abandoned by the DMK Government.

Reducing the number of beneficiaries drastically under the new scheme will be detrimental to the welfare of farmers and farm workers, she said.

Ms. Jayalalithaa dubbed the Government's scheme to provide assistance up to Rs. 300 per month to alleviate the sufferings of unemployed educated youth awaiting jobs after registering in employment exchanges, "eyewash."
