SV Arts College expels nine students

TIRUPATI: The TTD-run Sri Venkateswara Arts College has cracked the whip on nine students for their alleged unruly behaviour. The students have been suspended from the hostel with immediate effect and will be expelled from the college on the last working day of the academic year.

Addressing mediapersons here on Friday, Principal N. Syamasundar Naidu said that the seven III year and two II year students resorted to ragging, assaulting juniors and instigating them to hold strikes on trivial issues. — Staff Reporter

Lok Adalat on land acquisition cases

KADAPA: A High Court camp Lok Adalat will be held at Nyaya Seva Sadan on district court premises here from January 23 to 30 to settle pending appeals filed in High Court on Somasila project land acquisition.

Bishop dead

KURNOOL: Gorantla Johannes, catholic Bishop of Kurnool Diocese, died after a brief illness here on Saturday. He was 55.

According to reports, he fell sick while conducting morning service at the Cathedral here.

The funeral will be held on Tuesday.

Aged man run over

KADAPA: An unidentified aged pedestrian was fatally run over by a speeding lorry near District Training and Development Centre on the outskirts of Kadapa on Saturday. The lorry driver is absconding. The cleaner was taken into custody. — Staff Reporter

ICDS interviews on January 29

KADAPA: Interviews for selection of anganwadi workers and `ayahs' would be conducted at Kadapa RDO office on January 29 and not on January 22, as announced earlier, ICDS Kadapa Urban Project official N. Hymavathi said on Saturday. Candidates should bring their original certificates for the interview, she said in a statement. — Staff Reporter

Good governance

WARANGAL: Lok Satta party district coordinator Parcha Kodandarama Rao said the party proposes to select 20 members every month for the State level training. Addressing a party meeting here on Saturday, Mr Rao said the selected members would be trained in good governance and other democratic procedures. The party plans to enrol about 30,000 members in the district and the mandal-level enrolment would begin soon.

Party leaders T Vidyasagar Reddy, D V Ratnamala, V Venumadhavaswamy, I Venkat Reddy, Malothu Rambabu and others were present.

Athlete meet

KARIMNAGAR: APSRTC chairman Gone Prakash Rao has inaugurated the 18th MPV Anantha Memorial Athletic Meet-2007 of RTC employees at Ambedkar stadium in Karimnagar town on Saturday.

Around 350 participants from all the RTC zones -- Kadapa, Nellore, Karimnagar, Hyderabad, Vijayawada, Vizianagaram -- were participating in the competitions. Accommodation is being provided to the participants.

IT officer arrested

HYDERABAD: The income-tax officer of ward (1) of Chittoor was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation on Friday while allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs. 10,000 from the complainant to "avoid income tax penalty on his company".

"Incriminating" documents of properties, several lakhs of rupees and jewellery worth lakhs were recovered during a search of his residence. - Staff Reporter

Plea to scrap panel

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Toddy Workers' Association has sought scrapping of the Cabinet sub-committee on toddy policy, dubbing it "inefficient".

The association, which concluded its two-day meeting here on Saturday, in a resolution blamed the sub-committee for "lack of proper knowledge about toddy vocation". - Special Correspondent

Kapunadu plea

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Kapunadu has urged the Government to consider its representation to include the Kapu, Balija, Telaga and Ontari communities in the list of backward classes.

Kapunadu chairman Miriyala Venkat Rao and convener K. Appa Rao told a press conference here on Saturday that the High Court had directed the Government to consider the plea of the communities for inclusion in the BC list. - Special Correspondent

Couple ends life

KADAPA: A couple — Dasari Veerendra (23) and Ramalakshmamma (22) — committed suicide by consuming pesticide in Alladupalle village in Chapadu mandal on Saturday.

Veerandra, a lorry cleaner, and his wife were at loggerheads owing to rumours that he had an illicit relationship with his wife's niece, according to Chapadu SI Venkatapathi. A case was registered. - Staff Reporter

Body found

ADILABAD: A 15-year-old tribal Mesram Bojju Rao was found dead under suspicious circumstances by Indervelli police on Saturday at the Keslapur Nagoba Jatara site. According to Indervelli SI Komuraiah, Bojju Rao had taken Rs. 10 from his father on Friday evening for watching a cinema at the jatara.

However, he did not return home after the movie. His body was found in nearby bushes early in the morning. - Staff Reporter
