JD(S) to observe January 23 as anti-imperialism day

Netaji's birth anniversary

  • Plans dharnas and meetings at district centres
  • `Left parties cannot correct Centre's wrong deeds'

Thiruvananthapuram: The Janata Dal (S) has decided to observe the birth anniversary of Netaji Subash Chandra Bose, which falls on January 23, as anti-imperialism day.

Party State president A. Neelalohithadasan Nadar said here on Saturday that dharnas and meetings would be organised in district centres as part of the programme.

Dr. Nadar alleged that the Centre was taking steps to make India too submissive to American imperialism. He cited India's muted protest against Saddam Hussein's execution, the stand adopted by it against Iran in the International Atomic Energy Agency and the haste which it showed in signing the nuclear treaty with the U.S. as proof of it.

The Left parties which extended crucial support to the Centre were not able to correct it. They were also adopting a typical capitalistic mode of development in States like West Bengal which were governed by them. They were showing extraordinary haste in taking over land from poor farmers in places like Singur and Nandigram and handing it over to industrial monopolies or using it to set up SEZs. The Government's repressive machinery was being unleashed against those who protested against it, Dr. Nadar said.

In Kerala, by deciding to accept the ADB loan, the State Government too was helping in the implementation of the imperialistic agenda. The State had begun making the structural adjustments demanded by the ADB, the World Bank and the capitalistic forces of the world. The controversy over the signing of the agreement with the ADB by Kerala involved only technical issues. He asked the State Government to issue a White Paper on the impact of the loan on the economies of the countries which had availed it in the past.

Failure of the modernising government programme implemented with the ADB assistance during the previous Government's period should be brought to light. The same fate was going to befall the urban development schemes to be implemented with the ADB's assistance, he said.

Dr. Nadar said that if the Government had the sincerity and the political will it could implement these schemes even without the ADB loan by collecting tax arrears, mobilising funds from the emigrant Keralites and tapping the nationalised and cooperative banks.
