Karaikal group submits plea

Special Correspondent

KARAIKAL: The Karaikal Struggle Group (KSG) on Saturday submitted a plea the Union Home Minister, Shivraj Patil, camping in Puducherry, requesting him to help constitute a high level committee for conferring Union Territory status on Karaikal.

To establish IIT

The KSG convener, S.P. Selvashanmugam, said that the group had also requested the Minister to take steps for establishing the proposed Indian Institute of Technology sanctioned by the Centre in Karaikal.

Mr. Selvashanmugam said that the KSG was a people's movement founded by freedom fighters and enlightened people who found that Karaikal was being given step-motherly treatment by the Puducherry Government while implementing welfare schemes, allocation of funds and sharing political power.

At present, the region has no representation in the Puducherry Ministry while Mahe and Yenam, which are smaller enclaves than Karaikal, have berths.

Flood relief

The flood relief fund provided by the Centre for the region was not utilised properly, Mr. Selvashanmugam alleged.

Elected representatives of local bodies had also adopted resolutions demanding the Centre to confer separate status on Karaikal.

Further, the MLAs of Karaikal district recently protested the Puducherry Government's treatment.
