Staff Correspondent

Rs. 10 lakh to be released to construct commercial complexes

HANDICRAFTS: Minister for Women and Child Welfare H.K. Kumaraswamy inaugurating an exhibition of products made by women self-help groups in Hassan on Friday.

HASSAN: Women's empowerment could become a reality if women work hard and become self-reliant, Minister for Women and Child Welfare H.K. Kumaraswamy has said. He was speaking after inaugurating an exhibition-cum-sale of products made by women's self-help groups (SHGs) at Sitaramanjenaya Kalyana Mantap here on Friday.

The items on display included readymade garments and handicrafts. Mr. Kumaraswamy lauded the efforts of the women's groups that had come forward to sell their products, and said that such an exposure would help them study the market better.

He said there was a proposal before the Government to construct commercial complexes that would provide marketing facilities to such groups. It would release Rs. 10 lakh for the construction of these complexes at the district-level and Rs. 5 lakh for those at the taluk-level. Under the Aasare Yojana, women's SHGs would get loans ranging from Rs. 50,000 to Rs. 2 lakh, at reduced interest rates, to manufacture their products. Mr. Kumaraswamy said that the Women Development Corporation would organise a State-level exhibition-cum-sale of products made by such women's groups in Bangalore on March 8.

H.S. Prakash, MLA, lauded the work of women's SHGs in Hassan. He suggested that fair-price shops be handed over to such groups in the villages.

Zilla panchayat president Annappa Shetty promised to make permanent arrangements for selling the products made by women's SHGs here. Zilla panchayat vice-president Kamakshi Raju also spoke.
