Parul Sharma

NEW DELHI: In a significant move, the Supreme Council of Delhi University's St. Stephen's College here has decided to grant its Principal Anil Wilson leave from the institution till the time he serves as Vice-Chancellor of Himachal Pradesh University in Shimla.

At its meeting here on Thursday, the five-member Council resolved to allow Dr. Wilson leave from St. Stephen's for the period of his Vice-chancellorship or till his date of retirement whichever is earlier.

"The grant of leave is in accordance with relevant rules," asserted the officiating Principal Jacob Cherian here on Friday. "The Council wants to convey that vice-chancellorship of Himachal Pradesh University is a great honour not only to Dr. Wilson but also to the College and the community," he added.

When contacted in Shimla, Dr. Wilson confirmed the news to The Hindu. "I have been informed by the Supreme Council that my leave has been extended for three years till the time I am Vice-Chancellor of Himachal Pradesh University or till I retire, which ever happens earlier."

Dr. Cherian said a temporary appointment for the post would be made soon. "In accordance with rules, the Council has decided to make temporary appointment of a Principal for the duration of Dr. Wilson's leave through an open advertisement by this month end," he said.

As for the house and the car meant for St. Stephen's College Principal, Dr. Cherian -- who is also the secretary of the Supreme Council -- said: "There are many teachers who have been on leave and have retained their houses on the campus. As per the rules, Dr. Wilson can choose to retain the house allotted to him. The car is in the College garage and the new Principal will get to use it."

However, the alumni association of the College refused to react to this new development.

"The Supreme Council has taken a decision in this regard. They are the ones to decide on matters of administration. It is not our mandate to comment on this issue as it is an internal matter of the College," said Shankar Ghosh, president of the St. Stephen's College Alumni Association.
