CHENNAI: The motorcycle riders team that performed spectacular feats at the valedictory of the All India Police Duty Meet last week winning several rounds of applause has an interesting story to tell. The duty meets or medal giving ceremonies, a few years ago, had only routine programmes and some folk art events. Then came the idea for including an event that will display better the courage and physical prowess of policemen, says a senior police officer. Why not feats by motorcycle riders as defence personnel do? Then began a search to enlist volunteers for the high-risk act. There were many who were willing to enrol their names. Nearly 30 personnel, including a Sub-Inspector, were selected and the team was taken to Bangalore by the then Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Armed Police, Jagan Seshadri. There they got trained by Military Police personnel. After three months of rigorous training, the personnel were a prepared lot. The trained group then performed at some parade functions, adding a touch of bravado to the celebrations. Then came the question of training women police personnel too. The Tamil Nadu police can boast of a full-fledged team of skilled motorcycle performers. The show of daredevilry got more risky last week at Rajarathinam Stadium as the track was not even at some places, said a police officer. Despite this, the personnel proved their mettle. A policeman deftly climbed a ladder even as the vehicle was in motion, came down on time and continued the journey. Another almost went near the edge of the track, but did not falter.
