COIMBATORE: No legislation or law can bring about a change in attitude towards women. The change has to come from within, Poongothai Aladi Aruna, Minister for Social Welfare, said here on Saturday. "Female foeticide, female infanticide, domestic violence, dowry and other such barbaric social problems are much prevalent in our country. The status of an average Indian woman as compared to her counterpart in any other country still remains low," said Ms. Poongothai at the Founders' Day celebrations of the GRG Institutions held at PSGR Krishnammal College for Women. "Education for women should not only aim at employment, but also make them face challenges in life." Tracing the growth of the GRG Educational Institutions from the day the first institution was established under the Trust founded by G.R. Govindarajulu and Chandrakanthi Govindarajulu, the Managing Trustee G. Rangaswamy said: "Now the Trust has spread its branches to include seven institutions. The PSGR Krishnammal College for Women, PSGR Krishnammal School for Girls, GRG Polytechnic College, GRG Memorial School, Chandra Matriculation School, GRG School of Management Studies and the GR Govindarajulu School of Applied Computer Technology for Women are providing education to nearly 10,000 students." Meritorious students and rank holders were given medals and cash awards.
