MADURAI: Two students of Standard X from a Madurai school were among those who displayed their talent at the 94th Indian Science Congress held in Chidambaram recently.

R. Jothylingam and M. Umaiyorubagan of the Setupati Higher Secondary School here presented their exhibit, Oxidised Air Motor, which was selected after it received a good deal of attention at a State-level science exhibition organised by the Environment department in November.

Their `working model' was on the most relevant topic: `control of air pollution and less petrol consumption in vehicles.' Participating in the meet from January 3, the students explained how automobile emission could be reduced through oxidised vapour of petrol by fitting the device in both four and two-wheelers.

"The oxidised air motor reduces emission of pollutants to the maximum extent. It can be an effective alternative to motor parts like carburettor," said Jothylingam after demonstrating the motor on the school campus. According to them, a single unit would cost around Rs.525. The device brought down carbon monoxide emission. The proud moment at Chidambaram, according to Umaiyorubagan, was the encouraging words of eminent scientist M. S. Swaminathan, who appreciated the two students.

Headmaster S. Gopalan said he always asked students to visit arts and science meets held in colleges and universities. This model, which bagged the first prize in the State-level meet, got the nod for display at the Congress.

K. Sekar, a postgraduate teacher, who motivated the students, said: "Our country talks about energy crisis. Our students have shown how to save fuel and check pollution."
