GPO New Delhi

`best post office'

NEW DELHI: The Chief Postmaster of the General Post Office (GPO) here on Saturday informed postal customers at a meeting that the GPO, New Delhi, has been selected as the best post office for its services.

During a meeting of the Post Forum, in which residents' welfare associations of New Delhi participated, Chief Postmaster B. L. Bhati also informed the residents about various services being provided by the GPO like speed post, direct post, express parcel post and media post.

The chief guest on the occasion, Member of Parliament Jai Narain Nishad, praised the GPO for providing services to the satisfaction of the VIPs as well as the general public.

Alleged suicide by

IAF officer

NEW DELHI: A 31-year-old non-commissioned officer with the Indian Air Force allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself at the IAF residential complex in South Delhi on Saturday.

According to the police, Ajay Kumar Singh, a bachelor, was found hanging from a pole in the two-wheeler parking lot near Subroto Park around 7-30 a.m. He had his dinner on Friday and went to sleep in the barracks. Later in the night he allegedly committed suicide.

Ajay left behind two suicide notes addressed to his parents and friends. The notes said he was fed up with life and therefore taking the extreme step. He did not hold anyone responsible for his act, the police said.

His parents in Lucknow have been informed and the post-mortem will be conducted after they reach the Capital.

Man held on theft charge

NEW DELHI: A 30-year-old man allegedly involved in over a dozen cases of auto-theft and under the Arms Act has been arrested by the South-West Delhi police.

Acting on a tip-off, a trap was laid near S. P. Kapoor Farm House on Najafgarh Road and the accused, Raj Singh alias Kala, was arrested. One loaded country-made pistol was recovered from him, the police claimed.

Raj, along with his accomplices, had allegedly hatched a plan to free a Punjab-based criminal Amrish Rana from police custody during his appearance in a court here.

`Chain snatchers' arrested

NEW DELHI: Five young men allegedly involved in over 20 cases of chain snatching have been arrested by the South Delhi police.

Acting on a tip-off, the five, identified as Nawab, Afsar, Azaz, Irshad and Farman, were arrested at Lajpat Nagar on Friday afternoon. A car, two mobile phones and knives have been seized.

New loan scheme

NEW DELHI: The State Bank of Patiala, Shastri Bhavan, has announced a new scheme to finance home loans for allottees of Noida, Greater Noida and Delhi Development Authority flats. According to the Deputy General Manager of the bank, R. K. Rattan, the scheme is tailor-made to suit the needs of the allottees at attractive rates of interest.
