Thiruvananthapuram: Over 16,000 flowering plants are on display at the 36th Flower Show 2007 which began on the slopes of the Observatory Hills and the Institution of Engineers Hall premises here on Saturday. Minister for Tourism Kodiyeri Balakrishnan inaugurated the show at a function held at the Institution of Engineers. Mr. Balakrishnan went round the Institution of Engineers Hall where a floral display was organised. He also visited the stall of the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) on the premises. The former Mayor and member of the organising committee J. Chandra, principal adviser of the show S. Srinivasan and Kerala Agri-Horticultural Society president Lida Jacob were present. Over 500 roses grown specially for the show are a highlight, along with 50 varieties of anthurium imported from Thailand. Rare orchids, petunia, phlox, roses and other flowering plants and a big collection of cut flowers are on display. Dry flowers from other States and heliconia from Thailand, Singapore and the Netherlands are exhibited. Thirty nurseries and 57 stalls have been set up at the Observatory Hills. Besides the CMFRI, the Matsyafed and the Department of Fisheries are participating in the aqua show. The CMFRI has set up a reef tank and has displayed Bat fish, live corals, Tube worms, Cow fish, Clown fish, Banner fish, Trigger fish and four species of lobster. The organisers expect three lakh visitors at the eight-day show. The ticket for entry to the show from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. is Rs.10 per person and Rs.20 for entry from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tickets are available from the counters of State Bank of Travancore.
