Bangalore: "Children are like wet walls, the etches made on them remain even when the wall dries," said Sudha Murthy, author and chairperson of Infosys Foundation.

She was speaking at a function organised to discuss her book `The Magic Drum and Other Favourite Stories' at Crosswords here on Saturday.

Ms. Murthy spoke about the importance of parents' guidance in shaping children's lives.

"Since children grasp and absorb things like a sponge, stories we tell them need to have morals, so that they can imbibe them," Ms. Murthy said.

Asked who her role model was, she recited a Sanskrit hymn and said one's best friend and worst enemy is oneself.

The book was launched recently in Singapore. It is a collection of 37 short folktales written mainly for children aged between 8 and 14 years. The stories are simple, charming and straight from the heart, according to reviewer.

Children from Parikrama Humanity Foundation enacted two stories from the book and read out the story "Magic Drum", on the occasion. Ms. Murthy congratulated the teachers for training the children.

Sudhekshena Ghose from Penguin Publishers spoke about the versatility of the author and about the book. Children along with parents were present for the book discussion and interaction.

She also answered the queries of children and autographed copies of the book for the children who were present on the occasion.
