Udhagamandalam: A plea to permit the private sector to run buses in the Nilgiris has been made to the Government by the District Rahul Gandhi Social Welfare Association. At a meeting of the association here recently, the members regretted that while private buses were plying practically all over the State, the residents of the Nilgiris had been denied such a facility for long.
Policy change
They urged the Government to consider changing its policy in this regard. Association president S.M. Sadiq presided. By another resolution, the meeting wanted the Government to increase the quota of kerosene to cardholders in the district.
Shortage of firewood
Since there had been a shortage of firewood and LPG refills were not available easily, the kerosene quota should be increased by five litres. Subsidised firewood should be made available in all the municipal wards, the meeting said.
Community certificates
The District Collector should instruct the officials concerned to simplify the procedures relating to the issue of community certificates to members of the Puthirvanaan community here, the meeting said. The meeting commended the district administration for taking steps to restore traffic on the landslide-hit Coonoor-Mettupalayam highway in a short time and putting in place a grievances redressal machinery. It meeting expressed hope that efforts would be made to enhance the roads within the town.
