A volley of questions to select the three smartest collegians

Nearly a hundred teams from as many colleges take part in the `IMS Quotient 2007 Quiz'

    KEEN CONTEST: Quizmaster Anand Sharma fires questions at the Coimbatore city finalists at IMS Quotient 2007 in the city on Saturday.

    COIMBATORE: The city finals of the `IMS Quotient 2007' quiz contest conducted by IMS Learning Resources Private Limited took off on a grand note on Saturday afternoon at the Gee Dee auditorium.

    The contest, aimed at identifying the three smartest collegians in 24 cities across the country, was at Coimbatore for identifying the local team to be sent to the semi-finals.

    IMS Learning Resources Private Limited has been instrumental in guiding lakhs of students to achieve their dream goals, by conducting training programmes for facing competitive examinations like CAT, GMAT and GRE.

    It has also been organizing the IMS Quotient quiz, considered to be the largest undergraduate college quiz, annually for college students.

    The afternoon started with the first round - the Elimination Round - of written tests. Nearly a hundred teams from hundred colleges in and around the city took part with enthusiasm.

    Students were tested on their skills in the fields of history, current affairs, music, movies and general knowledge. Six teams of three participants each were selected after the first round.

    The teams that made it to the city finals were from Thiagaraja College of Technology, Amrita Institute of Technology, PSG College of Technology, Sri Krishna College of Engineering and Technology, and Government College of Technology.

    As the six teams made it to the stage to fight it out for the semi final position, the other students made a keen audience to the posers from Anand Sharma, Regional Manager of IMS, who was the quizmaster.

    The quiz had seven rounds to test the contestants' verbal skills and general knowledge skills. Audio and visual rounds too formed part of the contest. The six teams were kept at the edge of their seats in their eagerness to get to the first place.

    After a close fight, the team of M. Balaji, Praveen Kumar and Rahul Naryanan of Sri Krishna College of Engineering and Technology emerged winners.

    The team from Thiagaraja Engineering College comprising of R.S. Ramsaravana, Jason D'Cruz and M. Sankara Narayana Hemath were the runners up.

    The semi finals would be held aboard a luxury cruise liner at Goa.

    The three finalists would win a free ten-day study tour to Australia.

    The college would be given a grant of Rs. 1 lakh by the N.R. Rane Trust.

    Motorbikes, laptops, ipods and other snazzy gadgets would be given away to the other winners.

    The Coimbatore edition of the quiz was jointly sponsored by The Hindu and Microsoft and organised in association with PaGaLGuY.com, Star Cruises and ICICI Bank two wheeler loans. CNBC was the media partner and Scooty gals, the online partner.
