Over 1,000 students take part in the festival organised by Madras University

CHENNAI: It was a spontaneous exposition of cultures from different parts of the country at the inauguration of Kalai Saral 2007, the 22nd Inter University National Youth Festival, at the University of Madras on Sunday.

With the participation of over 1,000 students from 63 universities, the Centenary Auditorium was a burst of colour and music. This is for the first time the university is organising the festival.

"Uplift society"

Inaugurating the festival, Minister of State for Law and Justice K. Venkatapathy urged the youth to work for the uplift of society. In keeping with the mood of the event, he sang a popular Tamil film song, to the delight of the audience.

Kalai Saral was the culmination of competitions held in various zones and was aimed at promoting values by tapping the latent talent of the youth, Vice-Chancellor S. Ramachandran said. The festival was the grand finale of several months of hard work, planning and artistic and creative endeavour from the students.

"Augurs well for

youth development"

Only by encouraging diverse cultures could one bring peace to humanity in a globalising world, Tamil Nadu Planning Commission Vice-Chairman, M. Naganathan said. The festival would augur well for youth development, and hence national development.

The students should be lauded for not letting their academic schedule come in the way of development of a holistic personality through participation in the festival, Speaker R. Avudaiappan said.

Sampson David, member-secretary, Association of Indian Universities, and T.R. Pachamuthu, chancellor, S.R.M. University, were present.

All cultural competitions will be held at S.R.M University, Kattankalathur.
