Eminent persons honoured

CHENNAI: MGR Kazhagam has honoured 10 distinguished personalities from various fields in connection with the 91st birth anniversary of M.G. Ramachandran.

The awardees included former Vice-Chancellor of Anna University V.C. Kulandaiswamy, film actor Saroja Devi, writer Asokamitran, play back singer T.M. Sounderarajan and film director S.P.Muthuraman.

Traders' meeting on January 31

CHENNAI: A meeting to create awareness on issues concerning the traders, particularly those resulting from the introduction of value-added tax and liberalisation of the retail sector, is to be organised here on January 31 by Tamilnadu Vanigar Sangankalin Peravai.

It would also conduct a similar meet in Vellore on January 30. Shops in and around Chennai and Vellore would remain closed on the respective days, a press release from the Peravai said. Besides highlighting the issues, the meetings would demand repeal of the Tamil Nadu VAT Act, oppose opening up of the retail sector and setting up of special economic zones.— Special Correspondent

Fellowships

CHENNAI: Fellowships are open to commercial radio talk show hosts interested in participating in a seven-day workshop on HIV/AIDS. International radio experts from Washington will train participants in the art of hosting radio talk shows. The workshop, to be held between January 22 and 28 at Kongu Engineering College, Erode, is being organised by Local Voices India, a training project on HIV reporting for young media professionals in Tamil Nadu. Travel grants, scholarships and fellowships are available to produce high quality programming content on key issues related to HIV/AIDS.

Students visit to port extended

CHENNAI: Chennai Port Trust has decided to extend by two days the visit of school and college students to the port and the maritime exhibition being organised as part of the 125th year celebrations of the port of Chennai.

Following request from the student community the Union Minister of Shipping, Road Transport and Highways T.R. Baalu directed the port administration to allow the students and continue the exhibition up to Wednesday.

As a result, the valedictory function scheduled for Monday is being postponed to January 24, says a release.

The visiting students would also get to see Indian Navy submarine INS Vagli, which called at the port on Sunday.

The submarine was commissioned in the erstwhile USSR in 1974 and participated in different types of Naval operations, the release said.— Special Correspondent

Ubayathullah bereaved

THANJAVUR: S.N.M. Fatima Beevi (84), mother of S.N.M. Ubayathullah, Minister for Commercial Taxes, died here on Sunday. She is survived by five sons and two daughters. The burial would take place on Monday.

Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam leaders and cadres visited the Minister's house and paid their respects to Ms. Beevi.

Refugees arrive

PUDUKOTTAI: A Sri Lankan Tamil couple, their one-and-half-year-old son and another person arrived at Kottaipattinam on Sunday.

Police said that the refugees had come to Neduntheevu and then entered the Indian waters on a catamaran. Fishermen from Kottaipattinam had brought them ashore on their mechanised vessel.

Mangrove plantation

NAGAPATTINAM: The Centre for Environment Education (CEE) in Karaikal, has initiated mangrove plantation at the river mouth in Melamoovarkarai fishing village in Sirkazhi taluk.

Volunteers from the women self-help and youth groups planted mangroves on about 1.5 hectares. Shriji Kurup, programme officer, CEE, said that mangroves not only add beauty to the river mouth but also increase fish production.

A. Sampath Kumar, Project Associate, CEE, spoke about the impact of the tsunami and how mangroves helped in protecting coastal villages.

Mettur level

TIRUCHI: The level in the Mettur dam stood at 89.02 feet against its full level of 120 feet on Sunday. The inflow was 312 cusecs and the discharge, 7,996 cusecs. - Staff Reporter

House burgled

Nagercoil : The police are on the lookout for some unidentified persons who burgled the house of a retired government employee on Sunday.

According to the police, Syed Mohammed (62) was living at Thittuvilai near Boothapandi. When he had gone out to his relative's house in Nagercoil along with his family members, some unidentified men entered the house from the back yard and lifted 30 sovereigns of gold ornaments. The police have registered a case.

Compound wall demolished

Nagercoil : Uneasy calm prevailed for the second day on Sunday at Nithravilai after the police along with revenue officials demolished a compound wall constructed near the Eraviputhanthurai playground.

According to the police, residents of Eraviputhanthurai, a coastal village, constructed a compound wall at the playground fearing that it would be encroached upon by residents of Chinnathurai.

However, following the construction of the compound wall, the people of Chinnathurai were put to untold hardship. Later, it was brought to the notice of the Collector, Sunil Paliwal, who directed the officials to hold talks with the two villagers to settle this issue amicably. When this failed, the officials demolished the compound wall. The police have made elaborate security arrangements to prevent any untoward incident.

Power shutdown

Nagercoil : Power supply will be suspended in Nagercoil, Kanyakumari and Thengamputhur on Tuesday to facilitate maintenance work in substations.

The places are Vallankumaravilai, Manavalakurichi, Thadikkaramkonam, Nagercoil, Thittuvilai, Therisanamkoppu, Rajakkamangalam and Suchindrum under Nagercoil sub-station.

Kanyakumari, Kovalam, Rajavoor, Myladi, Vazukkamparai, Keelamanakudi, Azagappapuram, Puthalam, Kottaram, and Anjugramam under Kanyakumari sub-station and Thengamputhur, Parakkai, Puthalam, Melamanakudi, Ethamozi, Dharmapuram, Pazavilai, Osaravilai and Kattuvilai under Thengamputhur sub-station. — Staff Reporter

No water supply

ERODE: Due to maintenance work at Muthur-Kangeyam Cauvery Comprehensive Water Supply Scheme by Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board, there would be no water supply on January 22 and 23 in Dharapuram Municipality, Vellakoil Grade Three Municipality, Muthur, Kangeyam, Kundadam, Moolanure and Chinnakkampalayam Town Panchayats.

Rectified spirit seized

Dharmapuri: A total of 1,050 litres of rectified spirit worth Rs. 1.26 lakh, being smuggled in two Multi-Utility Vehicles (MUVs) was seized by the Prohibition Enforcement Wing personnel at Sogathur near here on Sunday. On instructions from the Superintendent of Police, H.M. Jayaram, a team was checking vehicles at Sogathur checkpost when they intercepted the vehicles. - Staff Reporter
