"Measures to prevent irregularities in kidney donation under consideration"

Special Correspondent

Will include monitoring of hospitals and doctors performing the transplantation

CHENNAI: Various measures to prevent irregularities in kidney donation are under consideration of the State Government. The measures include monitoring of hospitals and doctors performing the transplantation and introducing a system of police verification of the donors.

Announcing this at a press meet here on Sunday, Health Minister K.K.S.S.R. Ramachandran said there was also a proposal to strengthen the government committee that evaluate and authorise kidney transplantation.

The focus was to prevent misuse of the `love and affection' clause in the law that allowed those not related to the recipient to donate kidney. The proposed initiatives would be placed for consideration before the Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi.

Mr. Ramachandran said the Chief Minister had directed Health and Revenue departments and the Police to look into cases pertaining to sale of kidneys by 30 tsunami-affected women of Tsunami Nagar in north Chennai.

The Minister refuted the opposition charge that the women, belonging to the fishing community, resorted to the step on not getting financial assistance from the State Government. He said 26 out of the 30 cases happened before the present regime came to power. Mr. Ramachandran also accused the previous regime of not acting on a complaint filed by one of the donors in which the name and mobile phone number of the agent was also given. The Health department, he said, had forwarded the complaint to the police. The Minister said the State Government would take all measures to improve the living standards of the tsunami affected.
