KOZHIKODE: The Calicut Chamber of Commerce and Industry want facilities at the Beypore port improved in a time-bound manner. N.E. Balakrishna Marar, president of the chamber, and other office-bearers have, in a memorandum to Port Officer Haridas, after a visit to the port recently, demanded that the handling capacity at the port be increased from 700 tonnes to 2,000 tonnes.
Dredging sought
The memorandum seeks dredging to increase the port depth so that ships need not have to wait for long in the outer sea till space is provided for berthing. Installing of mobile cranes and speedy inauguration of the passenger terminal are the other demands. A delegation from the chamber will meet Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan, Minister for Ports M. Vijaya Kumar and Minister for Industries Elamaram Karim in Thiruvananthapuram on January 27 and impress upon them the need to speed up the development works.
Public meeting
A public meeting will be organised at Beypore shortly to highlight the need for improving the port.
