Lawyer told to appear before women's panel

Staff Reporter

Accused of cheating woman in Muthukad tribal colony

KOZHIKODE: The State Women's Commission has asked a lawyer who allegedly cheated a woman of the Muthukad tribal colony in Perambra by not filing a case relating to an accident to appear before it in the next sitting.

The commission was holding a sitting at the District Panchayat Bhavan here on Saturday.

The woman complained to the commission that the lawyer had not filed a case in the court for seeking compensation in an accident case in which she was involved, even though he was entrusted with the same.

The woman had met with an accident at Valancherry in Malappuram district three years ago and was seriously injured.

A total of 22 cases were considered at the sitting. The commission found that a complaint against a teacher of a higher secondary school in Kozhikode was false.

An organisation had alleged in its complaint that the teacher had `harassed' a student of the school.

Five cases were settled and counselling process was initiated in six cases.

Commission chairperson M. Kamalam and member P. Kulsu were present at the sitting.

A couple from Athodi in Vadakara in the district decided to reunite during the sitting.

The case will be wound up in the next sitting.

Three cases in which it was alleged that the wives were suffering from `mental ailments' were forwarded to a psychiatric expert for examination and report.

The commission also instructed the City Police Commissioner to provide protection to a trust office at Cheruvannur here which supplied home nurses.

A complaint was lodged with the commission following an attack on the trust office recently by a gang allegedly from Bangalore in connection with the supply of a home nurse to a family hailing from Tenhipalam in Malappuram district but now settled in Bangalore.
