CHENNAI: It is important to know your chef, announces this year's desktop calendar of the Institute of Hotel Management, Chennai. And the institute puts its students through the mill before considering them capable of feeding customers. This year's final year B.Sc. students, who took part in the annual contest of the Institute, are also contesting for the `Chef of the year' title. Two international judges from Australia and France looked at the students' skills with Indian and international cuisine.
16 teams
Sixteen teams from 20 institutions under the National Council for Hotel Management and Catering Technology participated in the three-day event, which was inaugurated on Tuesday. Each team had three members and was expected to prepare dishes in five hours with the given ingredients.The cost of the dish could not exceed Rs.800.
Surprise basket
Students were given a surprise basket and time to plan the recipe and cook it. A competent chef is one who can make vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes with equal confidence. On Thursday, a member from each contesting team participated in a live cooking show for the `Chef of the year' award.
