Koirala calls all-party meet

Amit Dhakal

KATHMANDU: Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala has summoned an all-party meeting on Monday to discuss the growing anarchy in the eastern town of Lahan and the indefinite nationwide transportation strike called by transportation entrepreneurs that affected life in the country on Sunday.

On Sunday evening 34 lawmakers belonging to the Nepali Congress, the Communist Party of Nepal (UML) and the Nepali Congress (Democratic) from the Terai region issued a statement calling for an amicable solution to the problem. They called for punishment to the guilty and compensation to the family of the victim in the Lahan incident.

Violence erupted in Lahan on Saturday after Maoist cadres clashed with activists of Madheshi People's Rights Forum, leading to the death of 16-year-old Ramesh Mahato, supporter of the forum.

Following Mahato's death, the forum activists torched 14 vehicles, mainly passenger buses plying along the east-west highway.
