CHENNAI: A Bill providing for the re-election of Mayor and Deputy Mayor was introduced in the Assembly here on Monday. Local Administration Minister M.K. Stalin, who attended the session for about two hours despite a hip injury, moved the motion for the introduction of the Chennai City Municipal Corporation (Amendment) Bill, 2007 aimed at providing for re-election and for restoring the monthly meeting of the civic body. "In the enactments relating to Municipal Corporations other than Chennai City Municipal Corporation, the Mayor and Deputy Mayor are eligible for re-election. The Government desires to have uniform provisions as regards eligibility of Mayor and Deputy Mayor for re-election in all enactments relating to Municipal Corporations," says the statement of objects and reasons.
Monthly meeting
The Bill also seeks to allow the Chennai Corporation to convene a meeting of its elected council at least once a month instead of once in three months. The statement of objects and reasons said the Government re-examined the issue and considered that the earlier provision mandating conduct of the Council meeting at least once a month should be restored, "as it enables the Council to address the problems and grievances of the public then and there."
