NEW DELHI: The Centre on Monday decided to allocate 100 MW additional power to Andhra Pradesh from the unallocated quota of Central generation stations in the southern region.

State Power Minister Mohd. Shabbir Ali said here that the Union Power Ministry had issued orders following which the State would receive 274 MW power instead of the earlier 174 MW.

He thanked Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Union Power Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde for coming to the rescue of the State and expressed the hope that the Centre would allocate more power in future.

Mr. Shabbir Ali said the State was in a position to meet the increased demand for power from the agriculture sector and said it stood committed to providing seven-hour supply in two phases.

Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy had demanded Dr. Singh and Dr. Shinde to allocate more power when he met them on January 11.

Last month, the Centre restored 115 MW power from the Kaiga Atomic Power Station to the State.

Mr. Shabbir Ali said that following the orders of the Chief Minister, the State Power Department was geared up to meet the shortage by buying power from possible sources.

Towards this end, the Government raised over Rs. 1,100 crores.

Replying to a question on TRS chief K. Chandrasekhar Rao's remark against the Chief Minister, Mr. Ali sought to know whether Mr. Rao was aware of `Telangana tehzeeb.' He said Mr. Rao should withdraw his comments and apologise to the Chief Minister.
