After e-literacy, "consumer literacy" if one may so coin a term has come of age in the prevailing scenario when the consumer is supposed to be the king. The concept of educating the public on the need to be vigilant and conscious of the basic rights of the consumer is being popularised in Mavoor grama panchayat limits in Kozhikode district. The objective is to protect the buyer from exploitation, in an age of crass commercialism when manufacturers are engaged in stiff competition. The Manakkad area, comprising two wards, is being promoted as a model consumer-protected village. A people's convention was held there recently to create awareness about laws to protect the buyer from being misled, in addition to the consumer protection Act. Programmes will be organised for a year, to sensitise people on the laws in force that help to safeguard the buyer from being cheated, besides creating awareness on weights and measures and misleading advertisements in the media, says M.A. Rawther, general secretary of the forum set up for the purpose.
