Tennessee Williams film festival for students

Not too many people in Kerala may have seen Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter and Spring, a brilliant piece of cinema directed by the remarkably gifted Korean director Kim ki-Duk.

When it was shown at the International Film Festival of Kerala in 2005, a film buff recalls, Sree Vishakh Theatre in Thiruvananthapuram was full an hour before the screening time, and there were more people outside the cinema, unable to get in. The film received a standing ovation.

A few weeks ago, students of St. Joseph's College, Devagiri, Kozhikode, were lucky to see the film described by The New York Times as "exquisitely simple."

It was screened at the college by Devagiri Film Club, which was launched last July. "We have already screened more than a dozen films," says Salil Varma, lecturer at the college's Department of English.

Invitation

"Our aim is to show as many good films as we could to our students. We also invite students from other colleges."

Michael Radford's Il Postino, Akira Kurosawa's Dreams and Satyajit Ray's Charulata are among the films shown so far. "We show authentic DVDs, purchased mostly from abroad," says Salil. "We do plan to build a library of our own, though we have some financial constraints."

The film club is excited about the Tennessee Williams film festival, its most ambitious venture yet, which opens on Saturday.

The three-day festival will feature films based on the works of Williams, one of the greatest playwrights who wrote such celebrated dramas as The Glass Menagerie and A Streetcar Named Desire.
