Patna : Reacting to a recent report which said that some Home Guard jawans were "yoked" like oxen at the Jamui district headquarters police lines to level ground for the Republic Day parade, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar ordered an inquiry. "Yoking jawans like oxen is a very serious matter and I have ordered an inquiry by an Additional Director-General of Police," Mr. Kumar told reporters here on Tuesday. A local Hindi daily on Monday published a photograph showing three Home Guards yoked to a bamboo pole, while another sat on a flat wooden board on it. Asked if it was aimed at raising the fitness level, Mr. Kumar said "it can be done by the use of pick-axe, shovel or spade. Certainly not by treating men like animals." Sources in the police headquarters said the instructions came from Sergeant Major Riazul Rehman, who, however, denied the charge saying the work was being done with machinery. PTI
