Vinay Kothari sets the benchmark

BANGALORE: The benchmark was set on Monday evening by Tamil Nadu's Vinay Kothari with a break of 87 in the junior National snooker championship's qualifying rounds and on Tuesday at the Bowring Institute. Things are getting hotter with two matches extending to over 3-1/2 hours to throw the schedule haywire.

The action on this day was restricted to one venue, while the senior snooker qualifying rounds begin at the KSBA's McDowell Hall on Wednesday.

Akil Patel of Maharashtra quelled the challenge of Tamil Nadu's Samarjit in five intense frames at 42-72, 57-44, 29-2, 72-29, 62-27 with the match taking up to nearly four hours to produce a result.

Also going the distance was Abhimanyu Gandhi's win over Himanshu Jain of AP. The MP cueist prevailed 62-10, 58-16, 48-55, 34-63, 59-4.

Tamil Nadu cueist Vinay Kothari had achieved his break of 87 — high by all standards amongst juniors — in the second frame against Rahul Bajaj of Karnataka, on Monday.
