Kolkata: West Bengal Sports Minister Subash Chakravarty will not contest the coming election to the post of Cricket Association of Bengal [CAB] president, following a request from Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee. Mr. Bhattacharjee said here on Tuesday that Mr. Chakravarty readily agreed to stay away after the matter was discussed between the two and Biman Bose, chairman of the Left Front Committee. The talks were held in a "cordial atmosphere," Mr. Bhattacharjee said. The election on February 1 generated a lot of interest when the Sports Minister announced his intention to contest. Mr. Chakravarty said he had made up his mind against contesting for the post following talks with his "leader of leaders", veteran Marxist leader Jyoti Basu, on Sunday. Mr. Basu had suggested that he stay away from the contest. Mr. Chakravarty had earlier been advised against contesting by Mr. Bose.
