THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: For the tribal children of Wayanad, primary education in Malayalam is an uphill task, as their tribal dialect does not possess even the slightest resemblance to the State's official language. The issue was highlighted here by the speakers at a day-long seminar organised by the National Alliance for Right to Education and Equity (NAFRE), which campaigns for the implementation of the Common School System (CSS), in the city on Monday. The CSS aimed at taking education to the masses in their own language, under the patronage of the community, but on Government expenditure. Introduced by the Kothari Commission in its 1966 education report, the CSS or neighbourhood schools recognised the responsibility of the education system to bring different classes and groups together and promote an egalitarian and integrated society. The commission emphasised that the CSS would be open to all children and would not depend on wealth or class.
