News Analysis
"On January 11, the U.S. Consulate General, Calcutta, issued a warden message to alert all U.S. citizens travelling to and residing in the northeast of the `serious security threat'", was a sentence in "U.S., Australia and U.K. ask citizens to keep off Assam" (January 23, 2007), leading to a query about a "warden message". The Consulate General of the United States states that the Embassy and Consulates General recruit American citizens who will volunteer as both wardens and alternate wardens. One of their duties is, in the event of an emergency such as an earthquake or widespread civil disturbance, to assist the Consulate in ascertaining the well-being of U.S. citizens in the warden zone and take the necessary actions to assist them. Is it Uttaranchal or Uttarakhand? A Chennai city report ("Computer jobs can cause back, neck pain", January 22, 2007, page 3) gave it as Uttaranchal, while another report, "JD(U) rebels who participate in the Samata convention will face action" (January 19, 2007), gave it as Uttarakhand, which is correct. The Uttaranchal Vidhan Sabha passed the Bill to rename the State as Uttarakhand by a voice vote in October 2006. The Lok Sabha passed the Uttaranchal (Alteration of Name) Bill, 2006, for changing the name of Uttaranchal as Uttarakhand in December 2006. The Rajya Sabha passed the Bill by voice vote, again in December 2006. President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam gave his assent to the bill and the new name came into effect on January 1, 2007. Uttarakhand is both the new and traditional name of the state that was formed from the hill districts of Uttar Pradesh. The name Uttaranchal came into vogue when the then Central Government (BJP-led) initiated a new round of States reorganisation in 2000. "Tax consequences of an unregistered sale" in the column "Tax Forum: Question &Answers" ("Business Review" page, January 22, 2007) was a repetition of what was published on January 8, 2007. It was an error. A sentence in "SEZ rules to be tightened" (January 21, 2007) was: "The Government was expecting investments worth Rs. 60,000 crores and generation of eight to nine jobs by 2009." It should have been eight to nine lakh jobs. In a report "ONGC seeks tie-up for KG basin gas" ("Business" page, January 19, 2007), it was stated that the ONGC has discovered natural gas in the Cauvery-Godavari basin off the Andhra Pradesh coast and the Mahanadi basin off the Orissa coast. It was a reporting error and corrected in the internet edition. ONGC's Southern Regional Office, Chennai, clarifies that it should have been the Krishna-Godavari basin. It is the policy of The Hindu to correct significant errors as soon as possible. Please specify the edition (place of publication), date and page.
