BANGALORE: With Shivajinagar, Bharatinagar and surrounding areas returning to normal, the police have started identifying those who indulged in violence in these areas on Sunday.

Commissioner of Police Neelam Achuta Rao told presspersons here on Tuesday that the police would use video footage to identify the people responsible for arson, looting and stone throwing.

After identifying the culprits, action would be taken against them. If there were any innocent people among the arrested, they would be released. The police would not hesitate to take action even if the culprits were juveniles, he said.

The police have registered 23 cases in connection with the violence and would register more cases if required. Prohibitory orders in force in the areas coming under the East division police would end at midnight on Tuesday. A decision on extending the ban orders would be taken after assessing the situation, Mr. Rao said.

To a query, the Commissioner said he would inquire into allegations that the police had behaved in a high-handed manner while dealing with the violence. Some organisations as well as people have complained that the police assaulted innocent people.

On Tuesday, it was business as usual in Shivajinagar, Bharatinagar and surrounding areas. Shops and business establishments were open. The Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation operated regular services from the Shivajinagar bus station and traffic was normal in these areas. Schools and colleges, which remained closed on Monday, functioned normally.

As a precautionary measure, the police have deployed additional forces, including the Rapid Action Force (RAF), and posted pickets at sensitive places. Patrolling has been intensified.
