KPSC member made acting Chairman

Bangalore: Governor T.N. Chaturvedi on Monday appointed Venkataswamy, member, Karnataka Public Service Commission, acting Chairman of the commission. He will carry out the functions of the Chairman until further orders or another person is appointed to the post.

Provisional selection lists ready

BANGALORE: The provisional selection lists of assistant executive engineers and assistant accounts officers for Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Ltd. (KPTCL) and the electricity supply companies (escoms) have been displayed at the corporate offices of KPTCL and the escoms. Candidates can submit representations on the selection lists in person up to 4.30 p.m. on January 29 to the General Manager (Administration and HRD), KPTCL Corporate Office, Kaveri Bhavan, Bangalore 560 009. The selection lists are also available on the KPTCL website, www.kptcl.com.

Award for police housing corporation

BANGALORE: The Karnataka State Police Housing Corporation has bagged the Golden Peacock Innovation Management Award 2006 instituted by the Institute of Directors, New Delhi.

According to a press release from the corporation, the award is aimed at recognising technological innovation. The former Prime Minister of Sweden Ola Ullsten presented the award at a function held in Kolkata recently. Executive Director of the corporation Prem Shankar Meena and Superintending Engineer N.S. Traffic violations

HUBLI: The Hubli-Dharwad Police have registered 2,795 cases of traffic rule violations from January 9 to January 21 and collected a total fine of Rs. 2,79,500 from vehicle owners. In a release, the Police Commissioner said 790 cases were booked against offenders on Monday and a fine of Rs. 79,000 collected from them. — Staff Correspondent

Five held

HUBLI: The Hubli Police have arrested five persons on charge of illegally transporting spirit on Monday. Those arrested are Ramasa Y. Irakal, Parashuram S. Habib, Srikant N. Chandragiri, Mohan Meharwade and Umesh Hosmani. Spirit worth Rs. 42,000 and a multi-utility vehicle used for transporting it have been seized. A case has been registered at Suburban Police Station.

Arrested

MYSORE: The City Crime Branch Police have arrested Afsar Pasha (22), an autorickshaw driver from Kalyangiri Extension on charges of robbery and burglary in various parts of the city. Police had been on the look out for Afsar. They arresting the accused on Sunday and recovered jewellery and silver materials worth Rs. 48,000. There were five cases against the accused in Devaraja, Saraswathipuram, Kuvempunagar, V.V. Puram and Nazarbad police station limits, the release said. — Staff Correspondent

Tourism proposal

Sirsi: An action plan for Rs. 5 crore for the development of tourism infrastructure in Uttar Kannada district has been sent to the Government, District in-charge Minister Shivananda Naik has said. He was speaking at a function after reviewing the CD prepared on the tourism potential of Uttar Kannada district, before attending the KDP meeting here, on Tuesday. On January 29, the CD would be released at Karwar by Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy, he said.

Two arrested

Karwar: The Karwar police arrested Jose, hailing from Cancona in Goa, near the Kali Bridge here on Tuesday and seized from him 1.9 kg of narcotic substance valued at Rs.1.9 lakh. He was carrying it in a motorbike. A case has been registered at Karwar police station. The police acted on a tip-off about a network engaged in drug trafficking between Goa and Karnataka.
