Two-wheelers banned in Tirur; one more attacked

Staff Reporter

Restriction on pillion riding to be imposed

MALAPPURAM: District Collector K.S. Premachandra Kurup on Tuesday banned two-wheeler traffic in Tirur taluk. The ban will continue till Wednesday afternoon.

Although the ban will go by Wednesday afternoon, a restriction on pillion riding will be imposed throughout the district, said Mr. Kurup. However, there will be no restriction on women and children riding pillion.

The restriction on two-wheeler traffic came in the wake of the attacks that took place in and around Tirur since Saturday.

Three cases of attacks were reported from Tirur after the killing of an RSS worker, Thirunilathukandi Ravi, 35, at BP Angadi near Tirur on Saturday night.

The assailants in all the cases, including the killing of Ravi, came on motorbikes and escaped after hacking with deadly weapons.

In the latest incident on Tuesday morning, Pilathottathil Kunhali, 22, a restaurant worker at Ponmundam near Tirur, was hacked by a four-member gang who came on two bikes. He was admitted to Medical College Hospital, Kozhikode, with serious injuries. He was attacked in front of his restaurant at 5.45 a.m.

The police have intensified vigil at Tirur and along the coastal belt of Malappuram district following the attacks.

An all-party meeting convened by the District Collector at Tirur on Tuesday decided to work together for restoration of normalcy in the coastal region.

District-level leaders of all political parties, district and police officials, and the heads of Tirur Municipality and nine neighbouring panchayats took part in the meeting.

Meanwhile, the police indicated that they had rounded up a few persons in connection with the attacks. District Superintendent of Police Tarun Kumar said that no details could be given now as the investigation was at a crucial stage.

The police have extended the inquiry to neighbouring districts following reports that the assailants were from outside.
