Bose wrecks Karnataka

S. Sabanayakan

14 wickets tumble on day one

KOLKATA: In the battle of seamers, Bengal seems to have established an advantage, albeit by a slender margin, as 14 wickets tumbled on the opening day of the five-day Ranji Trophy semifinal cricket match between Karnataka and Bengal at the Eden Gardens here on Tuesday.

The pitch, though devoid of much grass, did support the medium pacers to such an extent that all the 14 wickets were consumed by the nip, bounce, pace and movement off the pitch.

Karnataka captain Yere Goud chose to bat first and his team was right away in trouble with Bengal pacers, Ranadeb Bose and Sourav Sarkar, running through the top order in no time to reduce the visitor to 24 for six in the 20th over.

Eventually, Karnataka was routed for a paltry 89, it's lowest against Bengal. By stumps, Bengal was 121 for four, a lead of 32 runs with six wickets in hand in the first innings.

However, Bengal was pegged back by some smart work by opening bowlers, R. Vinay Kumar and debutant S. Dhananjaya. The duo reduced Bengal to 16 for three in nine overs, but a splendid 83-run partnership between Arindam Das (45 batting) and Rohan Gavaskar (63, 75b, 12x4) enabled the host to nurture a sizeable first innings lead when the game resumed on Wednesday.

"At this moment, I believe, Bengal has an advantage but that is very minimal. It all depends how the batsman play the first session on the second day,'' felt Bengal skipper Deep Dasgupta.

Bose strikes

Bose struck in the first and third over of the day removing Barrington Rowland and debutant K.B. Pawan, both beaten by late movement of outgoing deliveries. After Sourav Sarkar caught Bharath Chipli with an incoming ball in front of the wicket, Bose had C. Raghu leg before playing half-cock.

Bose, who reached 44 wickets with the six for 38 effort, touched a milestone by making Pawan his 150th Ranji victim. This was also his fifth five-wicket haul this season.
