Staff Correspondent
HUBLI: The Hubli-Dharwad Police Commissionerate has proposed setting up of five more police stations, including two traffic police stations, in the wake of new residential layouts coming up in the twin cities. In a release here, Police Commissioner Narayan Nadamani has stated that the staffing pattern of the commissionerate had been the same for the past ten years. Hence, new police stations have been proposed. Police stations have been proposed at Navanagar, Karnatak University, Dharwad, Ashoknagar and Hubli. Further, traffic police stations at Dharwad and Hubli have also been planned, he has said.
Speed radar guns
With the objective of regulating traffic and making vehicle owners adhere to traffic regulations, regular drives are being conducted. In 2006, as many as 66,491 cases were booked against vehicle owners and a total of Rs. 93,44,200 was collected as fine. The Commissioner has said that introduction of Speed Radar Guns on the road between Hubli and Dharwad had yielded good results as not a single accident case was reported in a span of three months in the accident-prone zone.
Detained
The Commissioner said four bootleggers were detained under the provisions of Goonda (Prevention) Act during the year, as a step towards containing illegal activities especially with regard to manufacturing illicit liquor. Stringent measures have resulted in increasing the revenue to the Excise Department. The curbs on sale of illicit liquor have led to increase in the sale of arrack, he has said. According to the Commissioner, the crime detection rate had drastically increased following recent measures and several cases including robberies and big theft cases have been solved.
People's help sought
The Commissioner has appealed to the people to join hands with the police in fighting crime. He urged people to inform them about illegal and suspicious activities in their area. He has also urged them to call phone numbers 100, 2233555 or 2222603 in case of emergency.
